As a preface and possible apology, this character is something of an experiment. To forestall some possible objections I've thought of myself, I'n happy to have her mindreading abilities not to work whenever it's necessary for the plot. In short, though this char could be really powerful (and is still quite powerful), I promise not to abuse her.
Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated, even little stuff that wouldn't stop acceptance!
Full Name: Mirene Linde (mir-EN)
Race: Elf
Side: Galzo
Birthplace: Ellesmera
Age: quite young for an elf, looks about 19
Gender: female
Birthday: August 7
Appearance: Mirene looks a little bit like Artemis out of Greek mythology—pretty, but distant and a little bit savage. She’s built like a willow twig, long, thin, and flexible, and her hair would probably reach her waist if it weren’t always in tangles. She changes her eye color every couple of days through magic for a change of pace. Her favorite colors for them are grey, blue, green, and gold.
Clothing: A plain traveling jerkin with a green, grey, or brown tunic, topped off with a blue traveling cloak. Her clothes tend to be clean but in bad repair, as Mirene spends much of her time in desolate or hostile locales. If you can’t imagine something being wearable in town, in a forest, and in a desert, she’s probably not wearing it.
Weight: 120 lbs
Height: 5’9”
Magic User: Yes, and powerfully so. In addition to solid general skills, Mirene has a wild talent in mental magic that is both a blessing and a curse. She has an unparalleled ability work her way into the minds of others, to the extent that it is a constant effort not to read minds of untrained humans and even young elves. I imagine it as the equivalent of a car on a sharp downslope—you can go a lot faster than a car on level ground, but you’d better hope your emergency brake holds when you want to park.
(As far as RP goes, I figure this will mainly be relevant with NPC’s. Other players who shield their minds at all can of course decide she doesn’t know what they’re thinking, and that’ll be my default assumption. However, it might be interesting plot device to catch snippets of thoughts now and then.)
Weapon(s): Mostly magic, to be honest. For desperate situations, she carries an elven-made stiletto in her boot sheath both for hunting and combat. If we have rider blades by now, she’d prefer a staff, spear, or knife, in that order.
Personality: Imagine reading the minds of your family and friends (and enemies!) for decades on end. As you might expect, Mirene’s view on life tends to be rather cynical, scornful of deception, and almost painfully blunt. She delights in bringing down schemes of other people, especially if they’re trying to impose restrictions on other people. Having seen firsthand just how different people are, she tends to favor rather anarchistic ways of doing things. She does have some faith in human nature, but tends to hide it behind a rather acerbic wit.
Likes/Dislikes: Likes: Quiet places, animals, honesty, free thinkers
Dislikes: Deceit, big cities, government, the overly abstract, the fact that dragons all have riders nowadays.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: -Powerful magic-user, and probably the best mind magic user on the continent.
-Decades of mind reading has given her a decent command of most languages in Alegaesia.
-She’s very active—give her a task and a reason, and you can count it done.
Weaknesses:
-Her jadedness often makes her come across as abrasive, which is usually ok by her.
-Tends to be governed by her emotions, and often gets impatient with complicated explanations
-Will stir things up for the sheer fun of it, with little regard for the consequences.
Family: Anunin—father, Niele—mother, Meldanem—older brother
History: Mirene spent most of her early years as a pariah. For a substantial time, those around her construed her perpetual mental prying as intentional, and thus rude to the point of offensiveness. Worse, this interpretation was completely understandable, since hearing confusing thought that were not her own had inflicted its share of psychological damage. Though her brother, Meldanem, always looked out for her it wasn’t for years after the talent’s manifestation that her family realized that the behavior was unconscious, and enrolled her in vigorous schooling to help her damp it down. These were much better times for Mirene, who’d spent most of her life up to this point confused, frightened, and often somewhat ostracized. She finally began to live a normal, controlled life in Ellesmera, buoyed by her burgeoning ability in other areas of magic.
Much as she enjoyed studying magic in the elven capital, she found her true passion in dragons after Eragon defeated Galbatorix. Her feelings for dragons were threefold: equal parts admiration for the impressive beasts, curious wonder of how the creatures’ minds worked, and a nagging conviction that dragons were somehow warped by having a rider. After all, it was well-documented that the rider-dragon bond forever changed both partner, but only the would-be rider had a choice. After so many years keeping a tight rein on her own abilities to influence others, the notion that anyone would so callously and casually change these creatures went badly against her grain.
When word reached her that a dragon, possibly wild, had been seen flying in the southern Hadarac desert, she found her imagination captivated by how an unbonded dragon would think. Over a few weeks, her notion crystallized into a resolve to see for herself. She left Ellesmera suddenly and without ceremony, pausing only to tell Meldanem what she planned to do. He discouraged her, but knew better than to try to convince her otherwise. She actually beat Galzo and his brother there, and when the pair arrived in her area it wasn't difficult for her to find them by magic. Like any other potential rider, she was allowed an egg for a short time. That night, she tried to somehow deactivate the hatching spell on it. To her surprise, she partially succeeded, but to her greater surprise, the egg hatched for her.
Since then, Mirene has found Galzo’s group to be surprisingly good company, largely because they like stirring thing up as much as she does. Also, Rhûn holds more sway over her than she’d like o admit, and doesn’t like the idea of leaving his brothers and sisters.
RP Sample:
Mirene placed the brownish egg gingerly on the plain cot she’d been assigned, and took a breath to steady her nerves. She didn’t know if a hatching spell could be undone, but she had to try. Saphira had wanted half of dragonkind wild, and by the gods, she was going to try to keep it that way. She sat down next to the egg, and began to fall into meditative state from which she performed all of her spells that required her full attention. Munnering words of the ancient language under her breath, Mirene slowly, methodically began to insinuate herself into the spell. Amazingly, she felt the enchantment give a little. A gust of wind blew in the open window, and the egg roll away from the warm breeze; compulsively, she lifted the thing to put it back in its place.
Tap[/b]. Mirene dropped the egg in surprise as she felt that faint pressure on the shell. That’s nonsense, she thought. That gust startled me when I was under, and I’ve started imagining things. I shouldn’t be surprised. I just need to shut that window so I won’t be distr--
As if in answer, another gust of wind swept the room. Mirene watched in amazement as the egg stirred and again began to roll—against the direction of the wind. Whatever composure she might still have had shattered in the next few minutes, as surely as the shell around the dragonet. It scrambled for its footing on the blankets, and looked around until its—his—eyes met her hers. She could feel it rummaging in her mind for the words it needed. Rhûn…name. Rhûn…choose…you.
Anything extra:
Mirene’s dragon
Name: Rhûn
Gender: Male
Age: 4 years
Color: Tan (BB6600)
Personality: Rhûn is perpetually in search of novelty. Nothing excites him more than seeing a new place, or meeting someone new, or learning something. Conversely, he’s easily bored by anything old or routine. Because his rider bond is more fragile than most, Rhûn occasionally displays the temper and disdain for humanoid company often shown in wild dragons.

Oh, and if anyone could tell me how to make the little û thing without cutting and pasting, I'd be much obliged!
